What is centrifugal casting?

Centrifugal casting is one of the casting methods.  But, it is not the stereotype of casting.”

Casting has a long history. The typical impression regarding casting is ” the surface of the product might show porosity” and “ the casting might contains inclusions. ”

However, using centrifugal casting technique to manufacture the products, there will be without porosity and impurities of the castings.

 

How does centrifugal casting make the casting so pure?

It is because of centrifugal force and directional solidification.

Casters will pour the molten metal into the spinning mold that has been applied the coatings and heated to the suitable temperature.  Through the mold rotates in the high speed, the centrifugal force would spread the molten metal evenly. The impurities and gases that have lower densities than metal would move to the bore.  Caster is able to machine these non-metallic impurities simply then.

Also, the solidification will start from outside to inside diameter.  Because of the directional solidification, the grain structure of centrifugal casting is quite fine.


The comparison among centrifugal casting, forging and sand casting

The processes of forging and casting are totally different.

Forging is the metal forming process.  However, casting is the solidification process.

 

Centrifugal casting v.s. sand casting

We have talked about the manufacturing process of centrifugal casting in the previous paragraph, the centrifugal force and solidification way would make each centrifugal casting non-porous and clean with fine grain structure.

But, sand casting is the molten metal is poured into the cavity and the metal solidifies. This solidification starts form mold top and bottom. It would lead to centerline shrinkage. The grain structure is much coarser than centrifugal casting.

1. Mechanical properties -> Centrifugal casting is much better than sand casting

2. Production of small order quantity-> Centrifugal casting is able to make it

1.     Strength of mechanical properties?

√ Much higher.

Centrifugal force and directional solidification make the clean piece.

Low.

Pores and voids could result in corrosion and cracks that would affect the mechanical properties.

2.     Possible for small order quantity production?

 

√ Yes.

Exact liquid metal is poured into the mold.

It would not waste the amount of metal.

 

 

Centrifugal casting v.s. forging

Metal is shaped by plastic deformation under high pressure into high strength component is called forging or cold forming. This process is without metal pouring and consequent solidification; it is related to high pressure only.  This manufacturing process could avoid porosity and voids. 

When considering cost, forging is comparatively not better than centrifugal casting. Sometimes we would need to sacrifice much metal to get the shape by forging. However, the requirement of metal amount by centrifugal casting would be less.

1. Mechanical properties -> Centrifugal casting is almost equal to forging

2. Cost-> If you need cylindrical components, centrifugal casting is more cost-effective than forging

Tubes/ Pipes    

Tubes or pipes manufactured by centrifugal casting is the most common material we produce.  Common stainless steel (300 series), higher grade stainless steel (17-4PH, duplex), Ni-resist and Nickel-based alloys are the alloys we have.

Radiant tubes 

 

Straight, U type and W type radiant tubes are the most common heat-resistant components manufactured by centrifugal casting.

The thinner thickness may lead to higher heat conduction.  The thickness of 4.5 mm of radiant tubes are able to make by us.

Rings    

Rings manufactured by centrifugal casting are done by the cutting process from each tube. The max. diameter is around 600 mm by our current capacity.

No matter you need rough machined or finish machined rings, we will be able to do that for you based on your mechanical drawings.

Bushings    

 

Our bushings produced by centrifugal casting are supplied to bearing manufacturers largely. The typical bushings could be with flange or without flange.

Rollers    

 

Welding construction is an important part for rollers.  To connect shaft with body is challenging especially for special alloy. Choosing the right welding material would enhance the lifetime of the rollers.

The world of centrifugal casting is bigger than what you imagine 

Making a good piece by centrifugal casting is always challenging.  Each alloy has its special characteristics.  Some alloys show high corrosion resistance and others might perform high wear or heat resistance.  Adding extra alloying element also would improve much on mechanical properties.  The complexity and depth of centrifugal casting are attracting.

The academic research is able to provide us the guide when we manufacture centrifugal casting.  However, the deepest knowledge is always from our daily casting life.  Sometimes the most difficult part is consequent processes including heat-treatment, machining and welding construction.
