Before introducing the bushings LAWAI could make, we would like to clarify the meanings of bushing and bearing.
Actually, bushing belongs to bearing. If you are not sure whether the items are bushings, you could just call them bearings.
However, you could not say bearing belongs to bushing.

Pre-machined bushings are what we supply mainly. If you need finish machined bushings, we will complete them by LAWAI team or outsourcing machining shop based on the complexity of the bushings.
Stainless steel and superalloy are the materials of the bushings LAWAI produces often. Could they replace the babbitt alloys ?
Whether stainless steel and superalloy are able to replace the babbitt alloys? It depends on the environment that the bushings are applied.
The babbitt alloys might not be the right materials for the machines are with the requirements of the high hardness, high loads and high-temperature resistance.
The paper, Performance Improvement of Tin-Based Babbitt Alloy Through Control of Microstructure mentioned that babbitt alloy is not sufficient for the applications nowadays, so trying to add the copper powder to see whether the strength will be improved.
The chemical composition decides the mechanical properties. And the chemical compositions of babbitt alloys are Pb and Tin based mainly. However, the stainless steel is Fe based with higher Cr and Ni that performs the corrosion resistance. If the bushings that should be equipped with the high hardness, high wear resistance and high strength, stainless steel is regarded as the priority instead of babbitt alloys.
If the requirements of bushings are the high hardness and high-temperature resistance, superalloy would be considered as the material.
Will the babbitt alloys be replaced ? The answer is “ yes” they could be. The Pb based babbitt alloys are not environmental friendly for the greener future. Therefore, the non-toxic and recyclable material such as stainless steel is much more popular and it is still the important metal material for most industries.
Choosing 400C or 17-4PH for the bushings
Stainless steel performs different levels of corrosion resistance and strength based on the grades.
440C is the common material for the bushings. 440C is the martensitic stainless steel and the corrosion resistance is lower than 17-4PH which is precipitation hardening stainless steel that could be heat-treated under different temperatures to reach the custom mechanical properties.
440C has higher hardness than 17-4PH and it is used for bearings which do not need higher corrosion resistance. However, 17-4PH is commonly used for aerospace, marine and valve industries.
Although both 440C and 17-4PH are corrosion resistance with the high hardness, the applications are far different.
